hallelujah!!!!!!!

April 27th, 2005

Finally got comments working on news stories for v2. What we are doing is keeping our old news but modifying the urls. So http://www.zeropaid.com/news/articles/auto/02232005a.php becomes http://dev01.zeropaid.com/news/5137/Wayne+Rosso+vs.+P2P+Community/. It’s a little more search engine friendly. We also wanted to utilize vBulletin, our bbs / membership engine, to handle news comments. So now when we publish a news story it creates a thread in vbulletin, and grabs the last 5 replies to that thread for display on the news page itself. Sounds good, but it’s a BITCH in practice.

So, we finally got it done with the help of an Italian php guy named Bolas that I have been working with. Thanks, Bolas. Now I am that much closer to launching this bitch. Now to just figure out some IP space. God I want to move to the AT&T backbone, but that’s a whole nother topic.

Michael Weiss, Morpheus CEO interview

April 13th, 2005

I was met Michael Weiss on April Fools day, no joke. He was on the panel right after mine @ Digital Hollywood, and I got to chat with him a bit inbetween. For those of you who don’t know, Mike is a very influential guy in the p2p/file sharing space, having once hoisted the title of Most Popular File Sharing Software. You have got to admire what Mike is doing, it’s easy for us to sit back and say “screw the RIAA,” but he is the one in the trenches actually working to legitimize our space. He is the one, alongside the EFF, writing checks to fight MGM v Grokster. He (unfortunately for him) is the one who had Ted Cohen on his panel and had to listen to such drivel as “how dare the consumer get used to downloading music for free. how dare they.”

Mike was nice enough to grant us an interview where he details his exploits to the delight of Zeropaid readers everywhere. It was a great interview all over, but to me the surprise important part was at the very end:

“We understand that users do not like bundled software in general and we are moving to a new “P2P search monetization” strategy similar to what Google, Overture and others do for web searches. Once we have this fully functioning, we will no longer need to rely on bundles to defer our costs for providing a free version to our users.”

Can’t wait to see that one Mike. If it’s as unobtrusive and effective as Google has managed to be, well, that would be impressive.

zeropaid version 2

April 10th, 2005

Hey all, thought you might want a sneak peek at zeropaid version 2. We are heavily in development of this project, and hope to have it released next week. Please leve comments or questions, now is the time to get your input in!!!

the programs front page, nice and organized. look at that category engine go!!!

the new homepage, filled with more info, but de-cluttered

a sample program page, in this case adaware. you are going to love the new programs format, it will be sooo much easier to add new programs, contact the developers of a program, make comments, all that! w00t!!

Sample news story, news will stay a lot the same, but a major change is all comments will be handled inside the vbulletin forum. other than that they are optimized for search engine indexing and i think easier to read.

so thats a peek at the new site, we have many cool things planned for the launch and hope you guys will like it as much as we do.

dcia newsletter / digital hollywood

April 9th, 2005

Just noticed DCIA chief Marty Lafferty included a summary of a panel we were on together in LA last week for Digital Hollywood in his weekly newsletter. Here’s what he said I said:

“Chris Hedgecock of ZeroPaid.com said P2P has grown to be a very widely accepted collegiate phenomenon, and the entertainment industries must step up now to legitimize it with new business models. It would be a terrible tragedy to the upcoming generation of young Americans if innovation were driven offshore by litigation or legislation that attacks P2P and overturns the Betamax doctrine.”

Well it was something along those lines Marty, and a great panel to be included on. Thanks again for the invite, even if I was a last minute sub in for BuyDRM head Christopher Levy.

Our resident zeropaid news pimp moneoa has just scored an interview with mark cuban, the man who promised to fund grokster’s defense. pretty interesting read, especially where he says he owns movies like the cult classic kingpin. who knew?
